(A downloadable leaflet is available on the subject of competition here.)

There are many opportunities to play competitive badminton beyond the club's Saturday sessions.

Club Teams

Swifts enters teams in two local junior leagues. The Aldershot and Camberley District Badminton League (ACDBL) includes a number of local junior clubs. The standard of opposition varies widely but matches are always enthusiastically contested. The Surrey Junior League includes fewer, more distant clubs, but these include very strong opposition and standard of play is usually quite tough. There is also an annual Surrey club team tournament into which Swifts enters a number of teams, often with great success.

This season Swifts will be arranging a number of 'friendly' fixtures and some internal 'Swifts vs. Swifts' matches to supplement the amount of competitive team play available to members.

Elsewhere on this site you will find information about the club's policies on recruitment to club teams.

Tournaments

Swifts Tournaments

The club runs both handicap and graded tournaments for its members. Details will be circulated at club sessions.

ACDBL Tournaments

The ACDBL runs tournaments for players from the clubs in the league. These are usually graded to separate county standard players from others and these events are an excellent first step into tournament play. Details will be circulated at club sessions. Also aimed at players from the same group of clubs is the annual Jubilee doubles tournament. In recent years this has been held at Lightwater and its system of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards means that players of all standards have something to aim for. Again, details will be circulated at club sessions.

Surrey Tournaments

The Surrey Schools Badminton Association holds a number of tournaments each season. These are restricted to residents of Surrey, pupils of Surrey schools and members of clubs in Surrey. Recently the practice has been to grade the tournaments to separate county standard players from others. A small number of 'Standards' tournaments are also run, restricted to players who have not been members of county squads or teams.   Entry forms for all of these events are made available at Swifts club sessions and can be downloaded from the SBBA website.

Tournaments in other counties

Unlike Surrey, some other counties run their annual championships on an 'open' rather than restricted basis and these are therefore available to our players. On our links page you will find the websites of some of our neighbouring counties.

BADMINTON England Bronze/Silver/Gold Tournaments

BE runs a circuit of tournaments around the country aimed at junior players at or near county standard. The tournaments are graded Bronze, Silver and Gold and promotion from one category to the next is by winning a singles tournament or by the accumulation of ranking points during a season. The age groups available are U13, U15 and U17. The standard of play is always very tough and the events tend to be lengthy. Participation in these events gains players a national ranking with BE.  (These events are often referred to as 'ESBA' tournaments because they used to be organised by the erstwhile English Schools Badminton Association.) Details can be found on the BE website under the Youth section.
